We are proud to welcome Nakoa Decoite to the Freestyle Team. Many words come to mind when describing Nakoa, as he’s the embodiment of dedication, perseverance, strength, and faith. Truth be told, we can all learn a lot from the man from Maui. Here's Nakoa Decoite in his own words…
“I am from the island of Maui which is still my home today. I grew up playing all sorts of sports. From football to polo as long as dad said “go”, I went. I didn’t start surfing until the age of 15. When senior year came around, I thought to myself, “What do I want to do after high school?” I really wanted to be a pro surfer. It was a long shot at 17 but I wasn’t taking no for an answer. From that day forward I put everything I had into becoming a pro and never looked back. Eventually my interest focused more and more on big waves. I love being in the water regardless of what I’m doing but there’s just something about catching a giant wave that gives you this unexplainable rush. With big waves, came big consequences and I definitely do not take these life threatening situation lightly. It took me a while to find the right way to train for big waves (and I’m still learning) but over the last few years with the help of some of the world’s best surfers, watermen and women, and Maui’s top athletes, The results have been amazing. Not only do I feel a lot better in and out of the water but my body has reaped a few benefits as well. With the involvement of Sports specific training, Stand Up Paddling and CrossFit (and a few other cross training routines) I only see things getter better. Last but not least, my faith is everything to me. God is the reason I do any of this. Especially when you’re surfing waves that are big enough to take your life, it’s good to have comfort from a heavenly father. If it wasn’t for my faith in God nothing I’ve done could have happened. I am grateful every day for the life he’s given me and I hope to share that with others. “Live for something greater”
